COURSE GUIDELINES

MRS. REYNOLDS’ SCIENCE CLASS

 

A.                 CLASSROOM CONDUCT

 

1.      TARDIES: You are expected to be on time for class. If you are not in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings, you will be marked “Tardy Unexcused” & a detention will be issued.

On the 5th tardy, a referral will be written.

            2.   ABSENCES: If you are absent excused, you have two days (not counting the day of your return) in which to make up the work. If the absence is unexcused, you will get a zero for that day’s assignment.

3.      DISMISSAL: When the dismissal bell rings, please remain seated until the teacher dismisses you. Chairs must be returned to their proper positions at the end of each class. Last period students will place their chairs on top of the tables to facilitate the custodians.

4.      FOOD & PHONES: Food, drinks, candy, gum, playing cards, mp3 players, iPods & electronic games are NOT allowed in class. Food & drinks will be thrown away while electronic items will be confiscated & sent to the administrative office. Cellular phones should be turned off & out of sight in your backpacks during class.

5.      RESTROOM: Restroom & locker visits must be made during the class change intervals. Each student will be allowed two restroom passes per term. If they are not used, they may be handed in at the end of the term for extra credit.

6.      LAB EQUIPMENT: Please do not touch any equipment unless the teacher instructs you to do so. Lab safety will be discussed & you will be required to sign a Lab Safety Contract, which will be kept on file.

7.      MATERIALS: You will be expected to come to class prepared by having the necessary materials such as pens, notebook paper, textbooks, calculators, rulers & colored pencils. Pencils should be sharpened before class begins.

8.      WASTE PAPER DISPOSAL: Waste paper must be placed in the bins at the end of class when you leave the room. Please do not throw paper across the room.

9.      GROOMING: Personal grooming (combing one’s hair, applying make-up & spraying cologne) is not allowed in class. This should be done in the restrooms.

10. RESPECT & COURTESY: Please raise your hand if you wish to speak. Don’t shout or try to speak when another person is talking. Treat fellow students & your teacher with respect & you will receive respect in return. Practice saying “Please” & “Thank you” and after a while, it will become commonplace.

11. CHEATING: Anyone caught cheating or enabling someone to cheat will receive a zero for that assignment. In addition, your parents will be notified & you will be ineligible for the National Honor Society. If it happens again, a referral will be written.

 

B.                REQUIRED MATERIALS

 

1.       Black or blue ink pens for assignments, and pencils for biological drawings.

2.       Science textbook (provided by the teacher).

3.       For notes: Small 3-ring folder with filler paper.

4.       Colored pencils (small pack of 12 is OK).

5.       METRIC ruler (make sure that the ruler has centimeters on it).

6.       Highlighter.

7.       Calculator.

 

C.        ASSIGNMENTS & GRADES

 

1.      ASSIGNMENTS: You will be graded on Classwork, Homework, Labs, Chapter tests & Special projects.

 

Points will be awarded as follows: -

 

Class work                 20-50 points

Homework                       20 points

Chapter tests                100 points

Quizzes                            10 points

Labs                                 50 points

Projects                         200 points

 

 

 

Your percentage average in the 9-week grading period is calculated as follows: -

 

Sum of student’s points for all assignments    X  100 =      %

                  Total possible points

 

2.      GRADING SCALE: The current grading scale is as follows: -

 

90  - 100         A

80  -  89          B

70  -  79          C

60  -  69          D

  0  -  59          F

 

3.      DUE DATES: All assignments should be handed in on time. Class work is due at the end of the period & homework is due at the beginning of the class the following day. Failure to do so will result in a zero grade for those assignments.

4.      MAKE-UP WORK: If a student is absent excused, it is the student’s responsibility to find out the assignments that were given. Each day’s assignments are written in a specially marked book & placed on the table beside the teacher’s desk. You have 2 days from the date of your return, in which to hand in the make-up work. Tests will be made up in class while other work will be made up at home.

5.      SCIENCE FOLDER: You are required to keep a science folder in which notes, handouts, graded papers & tests will be placed. You will list the assignments on a cover page for each chapter.

6.      SCIENCE PROJECTS: Special projects are compulsory (this means you have to do them!). These may include research projects or scientific article reviews.

7.      TESTS & QUIZZES: Tests will be given at the end of every major concept. They will be announced at least two days in advance. If you were present in class on the day the test was announced, then you must take the test the first day of your return to class after an absence. Quizzes on the previous day’s lecture will be given at the beginning of class. These quizzes may or may not be announced in advance.

8.      EXTRA CREDIT: There will be no individual extra credit in this class. If you do not use all your restroom passes for the grading period, you may hand them in at the end of the grading period & you will be given extra credit for them.

9.      FIELD TRIP FORMS: All field trip forms must be handed to me at the beginning of class. You will not be given permission to go to other teachers to have them sign your forms.
